How To Layer Like A Pro
The cooler weather is fast approaching and one of our favourite styling tips for Autumn and Winter is to layer our go-to styles for a warm and fashion-forward look.
However, layering requires a bit of thought and preparation, so it’s important to think carefully about the styles you are layering so that you choose the right items.
Read on below for our top tips on how to layer like a pro:
Play with sleeve lengths:
To avoid getting too hot and looking too chunky, why not play with sleeve lengths? This could be rocking a sleeveless tank or top under a trench coat, or pairing a long-sleeved top under a sleeveless vest or dress. By playing with sleeve lengths you avoid looking too heavy and it helps your temperature to stay regulated regardless of the weather.
Wear a summer dress:
For those in-between weather days when it’s not too hot, and not too cold, a great tip is to wear one of your favourite summer dresses and add a light trench coat or light-weight waterfall jacket over the top. For a flattering look, make sure you choose a jacket with a mid-waist belt to create a stunning hourglass silhouette.
Add a little colour:
Have some fun with your layers by adding a splash of colour! Choose a neutral colour palette and layer a neutral coloured knit in white, blush or grey over a colourful shirt and leave the collar poking. Try khaki, burnt orange or brown for an on-trend look.
If you want to make a great contrast, you can take the colour tip one step further and layer clashing colours like khaki and burnt orange. The trick is to keep the rest of your outfit neutral so it’s not too overpowering.
Embrace the sweater:
Despite the comfort and warmth they offer, a sweater can sometimes look a little shapeless and unflattering. This season, give them a second chance by choosing styles with turtlenecks, embellishment, side splits, low-backs or cable knit detailing. Elevate the look with a tailored jacket and fitted pants or a fitted midi-length skirt.
When in doubt, just make sure you add some structure to your layered look to ensure you don’t look too bulky and that you look your best. Great ways to add structure are by wearing a fitted jacket over a chunky knit, by adding a waist-tie, teaming a layered upper with a fitted midi skirt… the list goes on.
