Tell us a little about your background in fashion.
I’ve worked in the industry for 20 years, and have had senior roles with many brands in Australian retail. I started off in Sales & Marketing at Stussy and then became buyer and product developer at Kookai for seven years (with lots of trips to Paris!). I was part of the team brought in to turn Witchery into a fashion business and managed the cut & sew business there. As General Manager, I helped Mooks become an international brand, and then I moved into Sportsgirl as the Knitwear and Cut & Sew Buyer. I had a break from Sportsgirl to do a REAL job – have twin girls. Before returning to Sportsgirl as the Apparel Buying Manager. Following a stint as Knitwear Manager of Country Road, I came to Mesop, enticed by a better work-life balance and an amazing team dedicated to making Mesop the most exciting brand it can be.
Favorite designers or labels?
Isabel Marant, Toni Maticevski, Chloe, Rag and Bone, Willow, Misuzi, Alexander McQueen.
Some of the looks and trends your loving for Summer 14?
I’m a big fan of denim which I feel never goes out of trend. Summer is the perfect season for it to sit beautifully back with the feminine florals trend. The Summer ’14 colour pallet is also fresh and easy-to-wear.Soft greens and lemons contrasted next to bold colours like reds and pinks. Great colours to wear when you have that summer glow.
What’s your go-to look for summer weekends?
Great dresses, 70’s inspired smocking, simple detailing and floral maxi’s. Clogs in all different heel heights and colours. Skinny black jeans are my staple with a shirt, plain or denim and my basic linen black tee. And always my classic Chloe sunglasses, a long silver necklace or two and a scarf.
Your must-have piece in Mesop’s Summer 14 Collection?
If only there was one piece! My favorites are the Moroccan shirt as I love the print, the shape and it will be easy to throw on and look great. The floral kaftans for a statement piece when the weather is hot. So easy with my jeans and a tank. And for the weekends the tencel dress will be fab, with my clogs or flats.
Clair, you’ve been designing for Mesop for 6 years, what would you say is key to the label’s aesthetic?
For me the key to Mesop’s aesthetic has always been the women we are designing for. She’s busy, doesn’t follow trends to closely and wants something that seamlessly fits into her lifestyle. I feel there is so much noise out there in terms of fashion. I want to create collections that excite her, having a point of difference without being self conscious or contrived in terms of styling. The aim is to design easy, wearable pieces that are beautifully constructed and respectful of the fabrics they’re made from. Colour, subtle femininity and flattering silhouettes have always been a part of Mesop’s signature. At the end of the day I want these pieces to become an extension of her personality rather than something she needs to accommodate into.
And how has this evolved over the years?
We have focused on designing more of a cohesive collection for Summer 2014. We’re now able to create head to toe looks; from a skinny jean to a button down blouse, layered under a cropped cardi. The introduction of prints has also really changed the way we design. For me they now play a key role in driving the aesthetic of a collection. Fabrics and colours are then worked into the range from there. Summer is a great opportunity to work with statement prints that add an element of femininity while Winter is more about textures for layering. We also now have the luxury of a bigger design team allowing us to brainstorm and work shop designs. We’re really thinking about the end product and who it’s going to suit and how is she going to wear it.
What are the Sartorialist style trends you’re loving right now?
Vintage styles reworked with a modern twist of colour, fabrication or cut. Minimalist, clean looks worn with confidence! Statement prints in maxi’s playing with summer colour palettes.
What’s your 3 must-have pieces for a summer getaway?
- Loose floaty boho dress
- A soft, relaxed, white blouse that is an easy throw-on piece for the beach
- A classic, stripe linen tee
How will you be wearing your favourite piece from Mesop’s Summer 14 Collection?
My favorite piece for the season is our floral maxi. Not only do I love the modern feminine print – I also love how there is drama to this piece. You could wear it to a summer party with a pair of heals and lots of gold bangles or dress it down by putting it back with a Grecian sandal and a panama hat.
Welcome to Mesop Di! Tell us a bit about your background in fashion?
I’ve worked as a Patternmaker for brands such as Sportsgirl, Jag, Gorman and Scanlan & Theodore. I’ve made lots of cool things and seen some awesome fashion over the years! I studied at RMIT which gave me a good start in the industry.
What would you say is key to achieving the perfect fit?
I often look at garments on the body to see how they fall and probably spend too much time drawing smooth & perfect lines. Proving shapes and seeing how pieces fit together is also important.
Your favourite designers or style icons?
I have always loved the Japanese approach to clever folding and sculptural shapes; Issey Miyake, Comme des Garcons & Akira. But I also love the femininity and perfect shapes of Marni and Isabel Marant.
Is there a Summer/Resort style that you think looks amazing on everyone?
A soft, voile, loose fitting dress is always a must on hot days at the beach.
What will you be taking home from Mesop’s Summer 14 Collection?
Cotton silk voile for sure and the Tencel pieces which can be worn everyday and dressed up a bit for going out.
What does your role at Mesop involve?
As a junior designer I assist in preparing each range for sale, from initial design through to the salesman samples being handed over to our agents. I enjoy trend analysis, sketching new ideas, creating technical drawings and attending fit meetings.
