Chat With: Designer From Sass & Fate
AlibiOnline sat down with the talented head designer behind Sass, Fate and Betty Basics, Charmaine Mewing, to find out a bit about the brand’s latest Spring 2014 collection, her ultimate style inspiration and her must-have pieces from the latest range. The talented designer takes her own photos and transforms them into iconic prints seen in items like the Lake At Sunset range, Botanical Print and the Lucky Charm Print. Her dedication, passion and love of fashion has helped re-vamp these local labels to include wardrobe essentials with on-trend pieces in stylish silhouettes, fabrications and colour ways.
Tell us a little about your background in fashion?
At the age of three, with a pizza hut colouring in competition introducing me to rendering and I was hooked at 9 years old, after winning a competition to be a Junior ring master in the Moscow circus, from this colouring in became my addiction and fashion its fix!!
Which are your favourite designers and labels?
My favourite designers includes high fashion Yves Saint Laurent / Karl Lagerfeld / Valentino / Chanel and of course Alexander McQueen!!!
What was the first article of clothing you designed and what made you want to be a designer?
The first known article was a dress made of pipy shells that were hand drilled and wired together than branched into a metal wired leather number… to scared to describe further! haaa
How would you describe Fate’s spring 2014 collection?
SPRING? … Full of warmth and light, influenced by Art, form and colour.
What was the inspiration behind Fate’s latest collection?
The latest high summer was full of resort dreaming of Greece / sonnet days and a sense of enigma
What are your must-have pieces from Fate’s Spring 2014 range?
Pleated sheer pants or tailored and cuffed hand drawn checks , chunky open textured knits with a touch of luxe foiling.
How would you describe your style?
Easy, Cool, confident, savvy and most of all….. Charismatic.
What do you think are the biggest trends for both spring and summer?
Sheer pants and full sheer bias cut skirts, petal detailing, prints of tranquillity.
How would you style them?
Back with white. White is a huge trend for summer and looks great in monochrome.
How long does it take to put a collection together?
… sleepless months.
What are your three must-have new season pieces?
Long timeless, easy – soft – draped over coat, a printed trouser and statement tee layered with your signature style.
